Classes at the Ballett- und Tanzzentrum Otevrel

Our teachers are dedicated to the aim of doing everything possible to achieve the best for each individual dancer – no matter whether they are working towards a professional career or whether dance is a hobby: every student is of equal importance.

We focus a great deal of care and attention of the lower levels as it is here that the basic skills are learned – this is true for all levels and students whether dance is to be a hobby or a future career.

Whether one is successful in dance or not derives from the beginnings of dance training and how they proceed. For this reason, it is crucial to choose the right school and the right teacher.

Early Development

Early Development

This class is divided into Pre-ballet A (5-6 year-olds) and Pre-Ballet B (6-8 year-olds).

The children are made aware of the basics of ballet through play and their bodies are prepared for later ballet training. The focus is on learning to listen to the music and to move to its rhythm. They are taught correct posture as well as to control their bodies and train their abilities to concentrate. Through play, the exercises are practised either individually or in groups.

Classes in Pre-Ballet A and B last 60 minutes.

Elementary Ballet

This class is divided into Elementary A (Beginner), Elementary B (Intermediate) and Elementary Boys.

Students in these classes learn the basics of classical ballet. Training begins at the barre, moves on to smaller step sequences in the centre and first jumps. In Elementary B, girls begin pointe work. In Elementary Boys, there is additional work on building jump strength.

Classes in Elementary A, B and Boys last 75 minutes.

Character Dance

Character Dance is a special category of classical dance and is based on a variety of national folk dances. These have been stylised, reworked and integrated into the classical story ballet repertoire. The term ‘Character’ derives from a specific style of movement which, in turn, is based of different types of folk dances.

Classes are divided into exercises at the barre as well as centre work. Students practise individually, in pairs and in groups. Normal ballet slippers or pointe shoes are not usual in Character Dance, but rather special shoes with a reinforced sole and a heel.

Character Dance classes are separated for children and adolescents.

Modern / Contemporary Dance

»Modern / Contemporary Dance« found great acclaim and success through the American choreographer Martha Graham. Many choreographers who succeeded her also introduced their own new styles. Nowadays Modern/Contemporary Dance belongs in any serious dance training.

This class incorporates work on both the intensive basic floor and centre exercises (turns and jumps) of Modern/Contemporary Dance and dancing short combinations and a variety of choreographies to different types of music.

Videoclip

Dance is not only ballet, Character Dance or Ballroom dance. There are also modern styles like Hip Hop, Break-dance, Jazz and Funky Moves. It is especially via the media like MTV and VIVA that children and young people gain insights into the newest video clips and pop stars.

After a variety of short warm-up exercises, students in this course learn steps with turns and jumps from the newest music hits. These movements go across the floor and use all the space. Depending on the choreography, they are practised in small or larger groups. The classes are divided into Young People and Adults.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop means making something new out of something very old. Hip Hop started in the Bronx in New York in the 80s and can be divided into three different groups:

1. »Uprock« is an acrobatic, very fast form of dance, which presents fight scenes. Usually two or more dancers get very close to each other without actually touching. This type of Hip Hop often resembles the martial arts from the Far East.

2. »Electric Boogie« is a kind of machine-like dance in which the dancers move like robots. It was made famous especially by Michael Jackson.

3. Group Dances. This is where several people dance in sync, with exactly the same movements and in a group. What is important here is the constant movement and the turns which are precisely coordinated.

The classes are formed for Hip Hop for children and Hip Hop for youth.

This course is a combination of ballet and jazz and the class is divided into two parts. The first part is to warm up and takes exercises from the barre work of a classical ballet class. The second part of class is in the centre, where step combinations are put to modern music.

The choreography is easy to follow, as the aim is more to build stamina, muscle strength and a sense of rhythm. The classes are divided into different age groups.
